Coalition Members Joined Secretary Sebelius for Private "State of Women's Health" Gathering
On Thursday, January 26, Coalition members joined Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius for an intimate conversation about the positive impact the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has had in the lives of women like Robyn Martin. Martin, mother of 5-month old Jax who suffers from a life-threatening genetic disorder, says that removal of lifetime insurance coverage caps under the ACA has been a relief to her family. - Family Planning Works Act took effect on January 1, 2012. This entitles some 35,000 women under 200% of the federal poverty level to be eligible for family planning services before, rather after, their first pregnancy. Get more information or call 1.800.456.8900.

- Small Business Tax Credits – Get more information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or the Internal Revenue Service.
Creating Health Equity - Maryland's State Health Improvement Process (SHIP)
- Maryland is committed to reducing health disparities based on a number of factors that include gender, race, ethnicity, and georgraphic location. The SHIP is one tool to address this goal. It will:
- Create a framework for accountability that includes 39 specific measures;
- Incentivize local action, with strategic partnerships, to address regional needs; and
- Engage the public with tools that can be found on the site.
- Learn more about health disparities in our state.
Get Involved – Make Health Care Reform Happen in Maryland

- We need you! The Coalition is launching an outreach effort to women of color. Join and bring the voices of all women to our work to ensure that all Marylanders have the health care they need and deserve.
- Organize an event for your organization or community. The Coalition will be happy to help with handouts or a speaker.
- Let us know about other health care reform related events and we will post them on our calendar.

Coalition Updates
Left to Right: Anna Benyo, Leni Preston, and Judy WaxmanOn January 23, the Coalition held a well attended educational forum in Annapolis, which focused on health care reform and getting the exchange right for Maryland as well as tips on effective advocacy strategies. Thanks to all the participants, speakers, volunteers, and sponsors who made this event a success!
